Qatar is well-known for its ambition, steadily pursuing regional and global influence with an eagle eye. One key area of interest as of late is the digital and entertainment sector, a strategic sector that the country believes will drive its future economy and global standing. In the e-sports world specifically, it’s making bold moves. With the natural digital infrastructure fit, the capacity for soft power, the gap in the gulf, and e-sports’ reputation as a fast-growing market, there’s serious potential for Qatar to build a world-class e-sports hub.
As part of the Qatar National Vision 2030 development plan to turn Qatar into an “advanced society capable of sustainable development,” e-sports makes perfect sense because it creates business opportunities in media, tech, events, and tourism. To foster that initiative, there are major investments in high-speed internet, gaming lounges, dedicated e-sports arenas, and more.
But Qatar isn’t the only nation in the Gulf trying to establish itself as a regional e-sports destination. Saudi Arabia and the UAE are also on their own journeys to doing so. With other states pursuing similar ambitions, Qatar doesn’t just operate alone but is contributing to a collective movement across the Gulf.

E-sports wouldn’t be e-sports without the tournaments that bring it to life. One of the most significant events was the Qatar Esports WEGA Global Games, a global competition that took place from 2020 to 2022. Hosted at Khalifa International Stadium, it featured competition in multiple games, including the ever-popular titles of DOTA 2, CSGO, and Street Fighter V. Other game-specific events like the YaLLa Compass for Counter-Strike 2 and the Qatar Olympic Committee FIFA Tournament also enrich Qatar’s e-sports calendar. Additionally, tech fairs like the Web Summit Qatar feature further the discussion about and interest in gaming.

In addition to tournaments, Qatar has no shortage of support for e-sports. From grassroots Discord and Twitch communities hosted by teens and university students to the official Qatar Esports Federation, there’s a strong network connecting competitive gamers across the country. Qatar University, the only public university in the country, even features an e-sports club to help students realize their potential as e-sports athletes and participate in tournaments and championships regionally and globally.
Quest ESports operates as an industry pioneer, providing bilingual Arabic and English commentary, organizing online and LAN tournaments, and producing gaming solutions. They also scout, recruit, and train pro athletes to form internationally ready teams with world-class coaches and elite-level resources.
Quest ESports CEO Elie Honain, speaking about their partnership with Qatari telecom company Ooredoo, stated: “We want to showcase that e-sports is not just playing video games. We want to show it as a rewarding career. Ooredoo wants to empower the youth, give them a voice, and give them an identity, and gamers have been really ignored in this region, so Ooredoo has made a very bold and strategic move by identifying the Gen Z and millennials and making them stars in this region” (Gulf Times).
When brought together, youth-led communities and formal institutions lay the groundwork for future success.
Top Games and Trends Among Qatar’s Players
Popular e-sports titles worldwide are just as big and loved in Qatar. Tactical shooter Valorant, MOBA League of Legends, battle royale giant Fortnite, and football sim EA Sports FC are all top titles with strong local followings, all for different reasons. For example, the nation’s deep affection for football culture (hosts of the 2022 FIFA World Cup!) makes it no surprise that EA Sports FC holds a special place among Qatari gamers. As for tactical shooters, MOBAs, and games of other genres, college-aged players and younger audiences gravitate toward their fast-paced gameplay and team-based strategy.
While these console and PC titles dominate, mobile titles are also gaining steam in the country’s e-sports scene. One of the biggest collaborations involves the aforementioned company Quest Esports, the Ministry of Sports and Youth, the Qatar Esports Federation, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, and the Qatar All Sports Federation. All parties came together to launch the first Qatar Private Schools Esports Tournament in Doha, contributing to the youth engagement agenda.

The possibilities within e-sports in Qatar are endless, and the country has many examples to draw from to build a competitive and sustainable scene. Yet the emirate has already made strides in creating the framework. The Qatar Esports Federation provides structure to the local industry, helping to support players, organize tournaments, and attract attention from international partners. And the exciting part is there’s more room to grow. With more and more investments in digital entertainment and major sporting events, Qatar could become a favourite for hosting international tournaments and leagues, using the country’s infrastructure more, and eventually cementing itself as a next-gen powerhouse.
Can Qatar Compete with the World’s Best in E-Sports?
We’ve talked plenty about how bold and ambitious Qatar has been in building its e-sports ecosystem, but like any major undertaking, the journey won’t be without its hurdles. And how well can it actually compete with the world’s major e-sports destinations?
Obvious challenges include the smaller talent pool compared to other Gulf countries with e-sports recognition, and of course, the challenge of standing out in a crowded market. But let’s not forget that Qatar is full of strengths. With a strategic location between Europe, Asia, and Africa, world-class infrastructure, generous state funding, and incredible institutional support, the country is two steps ahead and by no means starting from scratch.
If the Qatari e-sports community, supporters, and stakeholders keep the momentum going, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the emirate turn into a true competitor in the coming years.
