Marvel Rivals is an excellent superhero shooter with addictive gameplay, but newer players wouldn’t know that by looking at its fans. NetEase Games’ online title has gained plenty of notoriety by being labeled as a “gooner” game, due to all the provocative outfits for the female characters.
Interestingly, the company has actually playfully responded to these accusations, essentially telling fans these outfits are so sexy because of the comics these characters are from. What’s hilarious about this is that NetEase isn’t wrong, as many Marvel fans will tell you that these comic books are filled with skintight outfits and subtle references to their fetishes.
Guangyun Chen, Marvel Rivals creative director, spoke with YouTube Channel Rivals Assemble (via GamesRadar), where he was bluntly asked about these skins. Chen said that a lot of these costumes are based on their appearances in the comics and thanked fans for buying them.
Some fans might want to trash Chen for this, but anyone who has been reading Marvel Comics for a number of years knows that he’s correct. Psylocke’s “Vengeance” outfit is actually her most iconic look from the ‘90s and was even more provocative than it is in the game. Emma Frost has also worn incredibly revealing outfits in the comics that make her in-game costumes look tame in comparison.
Luna Snow’s bootylicious swimsuit, on the other hand? That’s a Marvel Rivals original, and fans can put all the blame on NetEase Games for it. After paying $9.99 to gain access to it as part of that short Battle Pass, of course.
Rivals isn’t alone in making these “gooner” costumes, as Overwatch 2 and Apex Legends have also doubled down on these revealing outfits. Prior to those games, Street Fighter V was very guilty of being a horny game, and some of that thirst has transferred to Street Fighter 6. Making sexy costumes is basically a gaming standard at this point, and that’s okay.
Marvel Rivals is currently in Season 3.5 and has a sexy Hela costume for players willing to spend some cash on it.
