We're Getting a New Lollipop Chainsaw Game Without the Original Creators

Lollipop Chainsaw was a cult classic when it was released in 2012, featuring the works of Suda51 and a then-unknown James Gunn. While the RePOP remaster was something of a dud when it came out, updates and new costumes did fix the game’s reputation, even endearing itself to fans. That’s why fans were shocked that a new game in the series is coming soon, despite not having Gunn or Suda involved.

Dragami Games has confirmed that they are working on a new game in this series, alongside an anime series, promising that it will be another vulgar title that won’t be compromised by “censorship.” This feels like the publisher is taking the wrong message from the previous game’s success, as it was the wild creativity from Gunn and Suda that made it good. Even the fanservice bits served a purpose, usually saying something about the lead character, Juliet Starling, or having a funny joke.

Fans are pretty mixed about the new Lollipop Chainsaw game. While the usual “gooner fans” are down for more fan service games, those who enjoy the works of Suda51 and James Gunn are pretty appalled by the news. While those two weren’t the only ones who made the game, with some returning staff working on this sequel, their fingerprints were all over the script and world, so their presence will be missed.

Both Gunn and Suda51 are involved in various important projects these days, so we can’t expect to see them return to this game series anytime soon. That being said, it’s sad how the devs are trying to center the series around being pervy, when the original game subverted some of those expectations. Yes, it was still sexy, but they will need a strong, creative voice to make the combination of zombies and cheerleaders work.

Here’s hoping that the folks at Dragami Games can balance the sexy and silly in their next Lollipop Chainsaw game. If the initial release of the RePOP remaster is anything to go by, fans might want to keep their expectations in check. This could end up being a really good game, but there’s a part of us that wishes this were a one-and-done cult classic title.
