Nier: Automata Proves You Can Balance Sexy Character Designs with a Great Story

2B from Nier Automata

Nier: Automata is considered by many to be one of this generation’s greatest games, which is saying something since it came out in the same year as Persona 5. The themes surrounding life, purpose, and wanting more continue to resonate with many, to the point that an anime was made.

Interestingly, lead character 2B is also one of the more sexualized female characters in recent memory. Her unique outfit is very sexy, players get an achievement for looking under her skirt a number of times, and she’s also been seen in fanservice games like Goddess of Victory: Nikke.

Yoko Taro, the creator of Nier Automata and the Nier franchise in general, has been honest about 2B’s design in the past. He likes women and doesn’t mind doing partnerships with them for money. With all that being said, does 2B’s sexualized character design detract from the story? Or does that even matter when players are engrossed with her story and what she goes through?

2B or Not to Be

Anyone who has played Automata knows that the game’s story is all about finding purpose and fighting what holds you back. It’s probably why the lead character’s name is 2B since that’s just poetic and a little pretentious if you’re sardonic. Whatever the case, this game’s amazing and tragic moments always feel big and hit hard, even if 2B’s design can be considered “gooner” material.

It says a lot about Nier: Automata’s story that anyone who goes through it becomes a changed person or gets depressed for a month or more. This game’s story goes to places, and we aren’t going to spoil that for any newbies. Just remember that you have to beat this game multiple times and hit the ground running.

2-Sexy?

Once again, Yoko Taro is very honest about 2B’s sexualized design, and that’s somewhat commendable. The Nier franchise has a lot of scantily clad women, and it’s not a huge deal, especially with a cool story, alongside some fantastic combat.

However, you also can’t blame people for not taking Nier: Automata seriously, because some of these designs will lead to eye-rolling. We’ve talked about 2B enough, but A2 also has a pretty sexy design. It’s just hard to believe that a story with characters that look like this can be deep, especially when they can be seen in gooner games like NIKKE or Stellar Blade.

These sexualized character designs shouldn’t detract from the overall experience, but we can’t blame anyone for not being able to take this game seriously. Still, even with all that, we think that Automata is a great game, and it goes on sale quite a lot, so everyone has the chance to play it.

Maybe just don’t play it in front of any prudes.
