This might seem like a nuclear hot take, but could the Hammer be the best and most underrated weapon in Monster Hunter Wilds?
You see, this argument will definitely strike a chord in the Monster Hunter community, since everyone has their own favorite weapon. But there’s just something about the Hammer that I truly enjoy.
As one of the first weapons ever introduced in the series, the Hammer is a classic. It’s a weapon that lives to bonk monsters. And also, please stop asking why we still sharpen it with a whetstone. It just does that.
Offset Attacks!
With the recent buffs to the Hammer’s moveset, an offset attack is now available during the second charge of its combo. This makes it incredibly easy to land offset attacks and parry a monster’s devastating moves. Every time I pull one off, a burst of dopamine rushes through my veins, and before the monster even knows it, they’re knocked down with a swift hit.

This was the change Hammers really needed in Monster Hunter Wilds. It was underperforming when the game first launched, but now it’s become an ideal choice for hunters who crave that satisfying counter-hit. If you love to strike hard and fast, then the Hammer is always a solid go-to.
Sluggers!
The best part about the Hammer? It can stun monsters, opening them up for massive follow-up attacks from the team. When a monster is too fast for an offset attack, consistently bonking its head will gradually increase its stun value. Once it maxes out, the monster drops, stars swirling around its head, perfect for landing a Big Bang combo.

Hammers with a Stun build are always welcome in multiplayer hunts. Thankfully, weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds now come with built-in skills, and Hammers get both Slugger and Focus by default.
Low Skill Floor, High Skill Ceiling
Hammer is also one of the easiest weapons to pick up. You simply hit the monster’s head enough times, and you win. But while it has a low skill floor, it also boasts one of the highest skill ceilings in the game. Hammer mains can wait patiently for the perfect moment to swing just before a monster’s attack, or they can go all in with a full spinning charge.
It’s also worth mentioning that while the Hammer may not top the popularity charts, Monster Hunter Wilds producer Ryozo Tsujimoto has been a Hammer main throughout the entire series. That’s a pretty solid endorsement from the man himself.
I don’t know about you, but I personally think the Hammer is the best Monster Hunter Wilds weapon as it’s capable of switching engagements on the fly. It can just do blunt damage, sure, but the opportunities it can create are limitless. Too bad there doesn’t seem to be many Hammer mains in the game nowadays.
