Last week, we talked about how the Hammer is one of the strongest weapons in the game, but also pretty underrated. Now, there’s another weapon in Monster Hunter’s lineup that doesn’t always get the love it deserves. A lot of people are sleeping on its potential: the Gunlance.
A hybrid of a lance and a Bowgun, the Gunlance is the ultimate offense-meets-defense weapon in the series. It can block supposed “one-shot” moves from monsters, and it can unload a barrage of high-damage firepower straight to a monster’s face. Here’s why we think the Gunlance is the most slept-on weapon in the game:
Clashing Attack!
Monster Hunter Wilds’ latest mechanic (apart from Offset attacks) is Clash. This new move is designed for weapons that include blocking as part of their core movesets.
Clashing gives you that epic, cinematic moment after successfully blocking a series of monster attacks. Your hunter pushes back against the monster’s brute force, creating some of the most dynamic action you’ll see in-game.

There’s no denying that clashing with a monster’s attack feels like a power move. But the way the Gunlance does it is on another level. Once you pull off a successful Clash, a well-timed burst of your Wyvern Fire can absolutely shake a monster to its core.
Wyvern Fire!
Wyvern Fire has always been the most reliable move in the Gunlance’s arsenal. It’s easily its highest-damage attack, channeling all the Gunlance’s stored energy into a huge explosive blast. It’s powerful, but also limited since it runs on a cooldown.
In older Monster Hunter titles, Wyvern Fire usually took too long to pull off. But in Wilds, players can now chain it into their Gunlance combos, making it way easier to land those perfect shots. And with the new Focus Mode mechanic, you can actually aim and stop missing the air.
Steep Learning Curve, Big Potential
One reason the Gunlance isn’t super popular is that other weapons, like the Longsword or Dual Blades, look flashier and are easier to pick up. But the Gunlance has the potential to take down monsters in just minutes, and it could even compete in speedruns. It just has a more complex path to getting there.
Normally, this is where I’d recommend using the Cornpopper just for laughs, but that’s a story for another time.
The truth is, the Gunlance is a powerful weapon that’s tough to master. It can take days for a Hunter to really learn its full moveset or how to chain Wyvern Fire blasts one after another. And with a resource meter to manage, this weapon is built for hunters who are patient and methodical.
But once you figure it out, once you start stacking skills like Evade Extender, Artillery, and Load Shells, you’ll become a walking fortress. One that can deal massive damage and still hold your ground against the deadliest monsters. Once people realize its true potential, the Gunlance will definitely blow up.
